Global demand surges for new Australian-made anti-drone laser weapon

Ten News Plus turned its attention to Australia’s growing role in counter-drone defence this week, visiting EOS’ Canberra facility to see how laser and kinetic systems are shaping the next phase of the fight against aerial threats.

Reporter Carrie-Anne Greenbank spoke with Dr Andreas Schwer, EOS Chief Executive Officer, and Dr Oleksandra Molloy from UNSW Canberra about how quickly drone warfare is evolving and what that means for the technologies developed to counter it.

The report spotlighted Apollo, EOS’ high energy laser weapon, and Slinger, our remote weapon system already deployed internationally. Together, they show how Australian-made capabilities are addressing the changing threat from drones and advancing layered defence.

Dr Schwer described laser technology as the next step in air defence, combining precision and speed with a significantly lower cost per engagement. Dr Molloy provided an independent perspective on how the rapid evolution of drone warfare in Ukraine has driven international demand for new counter-drone measures.
