EOS partners with OGL to support young Aussie space explorers' Space Camp adventures
STEM and Space Education organisation, One Giant Leap Australia Foundation (OGL) recently organised a tour to Space Camp USA in Huntsville, Alabama with support from Electro Optic Systems (EOS). Space Camp USA offers an immersive experience in space science and exploration, providing participants with hands-on activities and simulations that mirror real life astronaut training. Located at the US Space & Rocket Center, Space Camp USA has been inspiring young minds since its inception in 1982 with its engaging and educational programmes.
At Space Camp, participants immersed themselves in exciting activities like simulated space missions, rocket building, and astronaut training exercises. They experienced hands-on challenges designed to teach teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, while fostering a deep appreciation for space exploration and STEM subjects. One standout activity was the Multi-Axis Trainer, a device that simulates the disorientation astronauts might feel in space. Campers also explored a vast collection of space artifacts at the US Space & Rocket Center, including the iconic Saturn V rocket, which played a crucial role in the Apollo missions. EOS Defense Systems USA, based in Huntsville, also visited the students at Space Camp to provide a brief overview of EOS' defence technology and capabilities in the US.
Alongside their time at Space Camp, participants visited landmarks such as Serrano Middle School Lake Forest, La Brea Tar Pits, Griffith Observatory, California Science Center, the Natural History Museum, and Disneyland (including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge).
For over a decade, Jackie Carpenter, Director of One Giant Leap Australia Foundation (OGL), has been organising these transformative trips. "I love watching the transformation of each individual and witnessing their growth in confidence over the duration of the trip," says Ms Carpenter. Past attendees, now adults, often reflect on the life-changing impact of their Space Camp experience. "It's a wonderful experience and you'll meet people that you'll talk to for the rest of your life," said one former student. Another shared, "Space Camp was actually one of the best things I've ever done."
Making space education more accessible is at the core of OGL’s mission. This year, scholarships supported by Electro Optic Systems (EOS) helped reduce costs for students attending Space Camp USA. "Successful students had the cost of their trip substantially reduced thanks to EOS," said Jackie Carpenter. "We are extremely grateful for EOS’ support; the contribution makes a tangible and measurable difference to the lives and education of our participants."
James Bennett, Executive Vice President of EOS Space Systems, highlighted the company's commitment to fostering future talent. "We are excited to be supporting Space Tour USA 2024, which we believe will ignite the students’ imaginations and inspire them to one day embark on careers in the space industry, helping to shape the future of technology and exploration."
